The city Attock is located on the northern border of Punjab; it attained the level of District in 1904. The estimated population in 2008 census was 1.58 million. It is located on the bank of the River Indus, just 80 km from Rawalpindi and 100 km from Peshawar. The Pakistan Aeronautical Complex, Kamra is just at a distance of 10 km from the main town.
There is a famous Attock fort which was completed in 1583 under the supervision of Khawaja Shamsuddin Khawafi, a minister of Emperor Akbar the Great. The Mughal caravan sarai outside the fort, which is almost on the Grand Trunk (GT) Road, was also built during this period.
Attock district has a climate of hot summers and cold winters. It is mainly hilly with plateaus and dissected plains. There are some points of natural gas and oil resources.
